A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux

Roll of Gaia

Made for the GMTK 2022 game jam. The theme was "Roll of the Dice". (hence the dice pun)

Run the earth and place various dice to earn points. Each colour of dice will have their own unique placement rules and effects.  Take advantage of the dice effects and maximize the points you earn to get a high score, before you run out of dice!

How to play:

  • You are given a deck of dice and your goal is to place them on the board to gain points and EXP. The dice at the bottom is your hand.
  • At the bottom left is your draw pile and at the bottom right is your discard pile. All dice placed on the board are sent to the discard pile.
  • On the left side, there are skill panels: One rerolls the value of the dice you are currently holding, the other discards the dice in your hand. Using a skill will cost one skill point which replenishes every turn.
  • Each dice colour has unique effects and rules. Strategize when and where to place a certain dice to maximize your score and EXP gain. once enough EXP  is collected, you level up and all the dice in your discard pile returns to your draw pile.
  • The game only ends once you fully run out of dice, or if the board is full. Earn enough EXP and keep the board clean to survive longer. Try reaching for a high score and have fun.

  • Note: This game is unfinished. A planned post-jam update will flesh the gameplay a little bit more with more content and dice types. If you already enjoy the game and want to see more, do check this game in the future.

Currently known issues:

  • If you managed to use your last dice, but also level up at the same time, the game will end instead of you being able to continue.
  • The font size in the how-to-play section and the credits section are too big leading to barely readable text.
  • No better tutorialization, so far the best way to learn about the game is by trial  and error.

5657pt and still patiently waiting for the post-jam update

In the meantime here's an analysys of when to move away from farm milking and attempt at getting score from elsewhere (assuming 4 fires per level, not counting points from fire)

2 adjacent edges (4 farms on one edge, 5 farms on the other), 5 fire on adjacent corners: 20x4 for first fire, 20x9 for second fire, total 520pt

3 adjacent edges, (4 farms on "center" edge, 5 farms on the rest), 5 fire on corners between the edges: 20x9 for each fire, total 720pt

These are import when going through the x55 levels (exp requirement ending in ~55)

And for any players out there: Here're theoretical maximum number of points one dice can earn:

Forest: 54pt (6+6x8 adjacent spaces; don't expect this high tho)
Lake: 32pt (4x8 spaces; Lake seems to be d4)
Bomb: 25pt (25 destroyed)
Farm: 20pt (2+3+4+5+6 w/o milking)
Fire: 16pt (6+10 destroyed)
Mountain: 6pt (6)
Village: 4pt (4)

Wow, I was not expecting you to came back with all these in depth calculations. I am impressed.

Also sorry that the development for this game got shelved at the moment, life and other projects got in the way. I cannot promise if I'll make the update soon but if it does come out I can guarantee you that the there will be more ways to earn points that balance out farm milking.

(1 edit)

Protips from someone who just got 2493pt (Jam Ver.):

All you really have to know are those strats

Farm Cheesing: Place a low value farm, and keep passing turns until it hits 6

Farm Milking: After a farm hits 6, use a non-6 fire to reduce its value, and keep passing turns again

Unlimited Free Rerolls: Keep passing turns until you get the value you want

Also a bug report: You get a game over even if you fill the last space of the board with a bomb/fire which manages to open some space up (my 2493 run ended because of this)

Oh damn, I know farm exploit was a thing but was not expecting someone to milk it that hard haha. (Time to nerf I guess) But anyway excellent work on the highscore, I am very impressed!

Also the game over bug was indeed a bug I did not forsee, it is because I've made the game to check game over conditions as soon as you place the dice. That will be fixes soon.

And with that said this game needs a better dynamic than just cheesing farms...Looking forward to the post-jam update
